Chapter Twenty-one

It took a few weeks for April to get away. Her parents always had something for her to do on the weekends. But, finally, late in August, Wendy got a note from Shadow and went to look for April.

April jumped up as Wendy arrived. “What’s wrong with you?” April noticed Wendy’s limp right away.

“I decided to walk around the reservoir, to get in shape,” admitted Wendy.

April looked at Wendy’s feet. “It’s those stupid sneakers. They’re too old.” Just then, one of the sea lions shot past them in the tank. “There’s Seaweed.” April waved.

“How can you tell them apart?”

April looked at Wendy in surprise. “They’re so different.” The sea lions had gathered in front of them, taking turns flipping out of the water and barking. “They remember us and want us to go swimming with them now.”

Wendy looked knowingly at April. “It’s nice of you to include me, but I know that they want you to come in.” April blushed, having been caught in a white lie. “Are you going in?” Wendy asked. She never knew what to expect from April.

“I’d probably get arrested. I told them that this was not the right time. I hope we’ll come back during LATCH,” April replied wistfully.

They tried to talk, but the three sea lions stayed right in front of them making such a racket that it was like a sea lion symphony. They seemed very excited about something. April clapped and put her face up to the glass tank. One of the sea lions came down to meet her on the other side of the glass.

“They were singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Scooter,” April explained. “She’s fourteen years old today. I just gave her a birthday kiss.”

The zookeeper came out to feed the sea lions and Wendy and April decided to move away to someplace quieter. Wendy let out a big sigh. “LATCH has been so wonderful this summer. It’s been like a fresh start for me. Except for Phillip and my incompetence in R and R, I feel like I fit in. It’s so different from school, where I’m an outcast. I think it’s going to be even worse this fall, knowing how much better things could be.”

April gave her one of her fierce looks. “Well, it’s time for you to take charge and make it better. We’re not working on transformation for nothing.” April eyed Wendy’s rumpled clothes and ugly sneakers. “The first thing we have to do is work on your clothes.”

“My foster family gives me hand-me-downs. They don’t have a lot of money for new clothes. In the past, I never really cared what I wore,” Wendy confessed.

April studied Wendy. “You’re already looking fitter.” Her face lit up. “Why didn’t I think of this before? I think I may have a solution.” April looked like a cat who had swallowed a canary.

“What is it?” Wendy asked.

“You’ll see.”
